Activists on social networking sites documented the first moments of the explosion in downtown Beirut near the port of Souma.

Videos showed scenes of the explosion, causing damage to buildings and structures, including a hospital, in a wide area of the event.

Witnesses described the blast as huge and horrifying, with one saying there was no building on top of the other in the vicinity of the blast, while the number of victims and those injured was unknown.
